Talk 2 Rep offers home based chat jobs

For those of you have been looking for jobs in online chat, Talk 2 Rep might be a good opportunity.

Here is some information on this company and the pros and cons of working/applying for them, so that you can make an informed decision on whether this company will be a good fit for you.

A Little History on Talk 2 Rep

This company has been around for a while, according to my research, they have been in business for about 15 years.

Their area of expertise is in call center management but within the last 10 years, they have expanded to include home-based positions in the area of online sales and customer service oriented chat.

In the past, these online chat positions did not all pay by the hour, but by commission only.  Recently, the company changed this payment structure and now all of their work at home positions pay by the hour.

Pay is $9 per hour, plus if you work in sales, you may be eligible to receive sales commissions as well.

It appears that the company pays their agents every 3 weeks via direct deposit.

Before you go and apply, I think there are a few things you should know about the company:

Talk 2 Rep: Requirements

Every company has their list of requirements and here are the requirements to work at this one:

You should be able to type at least 50 words per minute with no errors.

Yes, that can be a bit difficult, but if you do something often enough, you will get better, so my suggestions is to practice before you apply for a job with this company.

Must have outstanding spelling, grammar and punctuation skills.

Must be comfortable using the internet to find information for customers.

Must be able to handle 3 chats at the same time.

I have experience in chat, as of this writing, working in chat is my current side job, so I know how overwhelming this can be.  Well, actually, I don't know, because my company has a limit of 2 chats at a time and that keeps me pretty busy.  I honestly don't know how I would handle 3 chats at once, it seems like a lot.

Must have a high school diploma or a GED

As far as technical requirements, you would need to have a PC, not a Mac, and your computer would need to be hard wired, no wireless is allowed.

What happens after you apply?

So you go ahead and apply, here is what happens next.

You may get a series of tests via e-mail and if you do well on those, you will be invited to an interview with a representative of the company.

You will also need to complete a pretend chat session, this is so they can see how you come across in a chat environment.

If that goes well, then you will receive an offer from the company and start training.

Please note that Talk 2 Rep does not pay you for training.

It's something to keep in mind, especially since the training period is about 10 days.

The company also requires that you pass a background screening, which costs $50 and they ask you to pay for this.

One more thing, even though you are being paid an hourly rate, you will not be considered an employee of the company, rather you will be an independent contractor.  That means that you will be responsible to set aside your own taxes.

For more on the differences between working as an employee versus working as an independent contractor, please see this article.

My Take

Because I work in a chat environment, I might be looking at this with somewhat of a critical eye but I may be looking at this somewhat unfairly because the company that I work for is fairly extraordinary.  They pay for training, they pay us well and they only allow us a maximum of 2 chats at a time.

Having said that, if I was just getting into chat, I would jump on this company in a heartbeat.

The hourly wage seems good, you will be working hard since you may be juggling 3 chats at a time, but this may be a great stepping stone job to other work at home opportunities.

Plus working in chat can sometimes be a lot more pleasant for some than working customer service over the phone (at least it is for me!).

So, if you have been working from home on the phones for a while, this might be a welcome change of pace!
