The Best Side Hustle Ideas for 2018

side hustle

Hey all-  my hubby and I were out shopping for a Christmas tree yesterday and we were having such a hard time finding a good one when he shrugged and said:

"Well, we are only two weeks away...."...  GULP.

It's the story of my life, I am always running behind when it comes to the Holidays, lol.

But, you'll be proud of me on this one.

I am already thinking ahead to the New Year and thought I would put together a page on Side Hustles.

And maybe, if I get inspired enough, I'll do an actual Side Hustle Series because there are an infinite number of Side Hustles you can engage in (but you really should stick to just one, trust me on that one).

I love side hustles.

They keep life exciting, you get to learn new skills, maybe meet new people, and oh yeah, make a little (or a lot) of extra money.

But, I think there's a sweet spot with Side Hustles that can be hard to find.

You've got to find one that you actually kind of enjoy, you know what I mean?

It's gotta be something that you will enjoy working on after work or on the weekends OR it's gotta be something that is lucrative enough to get your butt in gear when all you want to do is watch something on Netflix.

I think everyone should consider having a side hustle.

Hey, if nothing else, it can be a great tax write off come tax time.

Talk to a tax professional,  because I am certainly not one.

But, there are many that will tell you that they think everyone should have a side business because of the great tax write off opportunities you can take advantage of.

Travel, mileage, work space in your home, hiring your kids to help you , etc.

So, here are some ideas for bringing in a little extra (or a lot of extra) cash in the New Year.

Like I said, I have other ideas and if I can get less lazy and set aside time to write about them, I will.

Let me know if you want to hear more!

And in the meantime, I hope some of these ideas will help you formulate a plan to make 2018 the best year for you yet.

  Side Hustle # 1
Let's start small.

Have you heard of Ebates

They offer a way for anyone to get cash back for the online shopping they already do.

And now you can spread the word about Ebates and get paid.  It's really easy to do, and you don't need a website.

Let's say you're saving for a special anniversary trip, or your child's college education fund, etc.

Just ask your Family and Friends to use your special Ebates link before they head over to or Overstock or Target and you  will get a commission payment.

How easy is that?

And to sweeten the deal, Ebates will give anyone who uses your link $10, to use as they please.  (Payment is done through Paypal).

Here's my link, it is an affiliate link, but if you prefer to not use my link, you can just go directly to the website.

(However, if you use my link, you get $10- SCORE!)

Side Hustle #2
Make up to $50,000 a year or even more, by simply picking up litter.

Here's an idea that you can take and run with... right away.

Here's the scoop.

So, you've seen the many thousands of strip malls all over the U.S. (and maybe  even the world), right?

Well, these strip malls (as well as other empty lots, Office building parking lots, Warehouse parking lots, etc) need to have their littler picked up regularly

Brian Winch of Cleanlots  has made a multi-million dollar business by doing just that.  He calls it "America's simplest business".

There are many large businesses that may already have a professional cleaning service but there are many more little businesses that just do it themselves and may be happy to pay someone a  reasonable fee to come in and do it for them.

The best part is that this type of side hustle may not require you to have to give up your full-time job, at least, not until you make enough money to replace your full-time job.

This is something that you can do early in the morning before you go into work, or late at night after your work day is complete.

Ladies, you may want to partner up with your husbands/brothers/sons on this one for safety reasons.

This is something that you can do by just speaking to local business owners in your area, or if you feel you may need a little more direction on how to approach business owners, how much to charge, and what kinds of tools you would need,

Brian has an e-book that details how to start the business and how to run it successfully from the get-go, as well as live support available from Brian himself to answer any questions you may have.

$50,000 a year for working just a few hours a day?  That sounds like a winning side hustle to me!

   Get Paid To... Walk Around

If you want something SUPER easy, why not get paid to be a Human Billboard?

Believe it or not,  there are companies that will pay you up to $20 an hour just to walk around heavily populated areas with a tablet advertising a product or company attached to your backpack..

And no, this isn't something that will only work for college students.

There are people of many different ages and interests who are doing this and getting paid.

The company offering this is NOMAD.  Here's the link to apply:

Right now, it's easier to get hired on with the company if you live in some of their bigger markets such as Los Angeles, San Diego, New York and Seattle.

But the company is expanding out to about 20 major metropolitan areas and 100+ campuses by the end of next year (2018).

If you're interested, I highly suggest jumping on it right away, as the waiting list can be up to 4 weeks long in some states (such as Texas).

Here's the link to apply:

Side Hustle #4
Start a Twitter Business

Mark my words this is going to be big in 2018.

Mostly because I think a lot of business owners will need Social Media Managers stat

Social Media is only getting bigger, not smaller, but it TAKES TIME for business owners to get their message out there and most of them would rather spend their valuable time on their business rather than promoting it on Social Media.

My Social Media medium of choice?

Definitely Twitter.

It's very manageable to me, with a low learning curve, lots of FREE tools (such as Buffer, Hootsuite and Social Oomph) to automate your social media postings, thus freeing up your time and giving you a larger profit margin.

Also, Twitter is very suited to getting getting lots of eyeballs on a business in a relatively short amount of time.

But before you offer your services as a Social Media manager on Twitter, you have to have some social proof that you know how to gain Twitter followers and how to spread a message on Twitter.

If you want to do this the free way?

Check out :

How to get 1 Thousand Followers in 10 Days

The neat thing about gaining lots of Twitter followers is that you can take your Twitter business in a different direction if you want to and can actually get paid to Tweet by big Brands once you have grown a very large Twitter following.

Talk about a pretty cool Side Hustle, right?

But in the meantime, your best bet for making money on Twitter is being a Social Media manager for brands, big and small, restaurants, local businesses, and established bloggers.

If you would like someone who can walk you through step by step on how to set this type of business up, the course I recommend for that is Chris Towland's Run an Autopilot Twitter Marketing Service with Social Oomph .  It's an Udemy Course that is $195 but the price for my readers is marked down to about $13 right now, I'm not sure how long my readers will be able to get that price though.

I've gone through this course about 4 times ( I need a lot of hand-holding, lol) and it's very helpful; it gives you step by step instructions on how to go from 0-

to building a Twitter business that can earn you a good living.

Side Hustle #5
Start a Virtual Assistant Business

Along the same lines as starting your own Twitter business, working as a Virtual Assistant is pretty big right now.

All you have to do is see many of the daily job leads I post to see evidence of that.

If you head over to Craigslist in your city, I am positive that you will see dozens of job postings every single day for administrative assistants.

These are jobs that just about anyone can do.

Think you don't have the skills needed to work from home as a Virtual Assistant?

Think again.

In fact, check out this list of 150+ Virtual Assistant services that you can offer today by Gina Horkey.

She started her own Virtual Assistant Business as well as a Freelance Writing Business (more on that later) and became the breadwinner for her family.

Now she teaches others how to do that for themselves through her  paid course but she also has a wonderfully detailed blog post on how to break into the Virtual Assistant Business which you can find here

The blog post is so detailed that I honestly can't believe she gave away so much information for free but I think she genuinely has a heart to help others succeed.

If you are interested in this type of work but are not sure if you would want to build a business doing this, my recommendation is to apply to some VA companies and see if you like doing this type of work.

There are plenty of companies that hire people to do this type of work, as, again, it is in high demand right now.  For a list of companies that hire Virtual Assistants, please see my page on the topic at :

Side Hustle #6
Start Working as a Freelance Writer

Here's a side hustle that could be very lucrative if you are... willing to hustle.

I go through many job leads in the course of a week.

Without question, the most plentiful job leads are in the area of Freelance Writing.

Freelance writing is something that I think will always be in demand.

Especially now with blogs, local businesses and celebrities establishing deep roots in the online world.

Everyone goes online to get their news, gossip, research and information.

Information needs to be written.

It needs to be articulated, maybe with a little flair.

That takes time, and skill.

Freelance writing is not easy.

But I don't think it's impossibly difficult either.

One thing I do know for sure?

There are more freelance writing jobs out there than the human race knows what to do with.

If you're not a Freelance writer by trade but still want a slice of the pie, I suggest you start small.

Look to Crowdsourcing sites that pay small amounts of money to get small amounts of work done.

Look at some of the sites listed on this page:

as well as :

When you're ready to challenge yourself a bit more, start looking at established freelance writing sites.

I have a list of these sites at:

Note: this is an older page that needs to be re-done but the information there is still good. ;)

And if you feel like you need a little more direction or step by step instruction on how to make freelance writing your side hustle... hey, I get it.

Believe me, I FEEL you.

In that case, I highly recommend checking out Ms. Gina Horkey's  Blog Post on Freelance Writing  found right here

and her paid course found here.

Look, she has made it happen as a Virtual Assistant and Freelance Writer and she knows exactly what steps to take to get you rocking on a new side hustle as a Freelance Writer.

Side Hustle #7
Make a good income as a Pet Sitter

Look, people LOVE their pets.

I didn't know how much until we got our 2 puppies.

Fact:  they are not puppies anymore but we still call them that because they will always be our puppies.

These puppies of ours have taken over our life.  Now, when we are at parties, instead of showing people pictures of our kids, we show them pictures of our puppies.

And I know we are not unique.

Like I said, people love their pets.

And you'd better believe they are willing to spend money on making sure they are well taken care of.

This is a great side hustle because people go out of town, they go on vacation, they work all day and need someone to walk their pets.

You can do all this right?

You can even do this ONLY on the weekends so as to make this a weekend side hustle.

What are the best websites to offer your services on ?

One other thing you may want to do is advertise pretty heavily.

Be clever about your advertising.

Post your phone number on those free boards found at Vet clinics or Pet Stores.

Use a Free Google Voice number so you  don't have to use your own private number.

Also, try opening a Doggie Themed Twitter and/or Instagram account and follow the 1K Followers in 10 days rule to build yourself a following, then post doggie pictures to your heart's content.

Then advertise your local services on your established Social Media channel .

Simply link your Instagram and Twitter account to a free website that you can create on Wix (they are drag and click free websites you can create in an hour.).

That's a great way to start your own side hustle and best of all, if you go this route, you don't have to share a portion of your revenue with a company such as

One last note.

My sister's dog walker makes $30-45 an hour as a Dog Walker (walking 2-3 dogs at the same time) and makes $150+ in one weekend of watching her dog.

Just sayin'.

Side Hustle #8
Get Paid to help someone find a Work at Home Career

This hearkens back to affiliate income.

I told you about that, right?

This is where you get a commission for simply referring someone to a product that you believe in.

I just signed up for the Work-At-Home Summit and I recommend you do as well if you have a blog and it fits with your website and audience!

But even if you don't have a blog, you may want to give this a little look-see, because I think it has the potential to be a really great event that will be happening in early 2018.

Not only will it be a way for many people to find the work at home job of their dreams, but you will be able to have the chance to earn a commission just by spreading the word about this event.

This event has been created by Caitlin Pyle and is gathering some of the biggest names in business to help put together workshops in various industries to help get people working from home.

You will earn 40% commission as an affiliate ;

Plus, there's $50,000 in cash prizes up for grabs!

Here are just a few examples of how much you’d earn if you sold...

10 “Confident” packages at $247 = $988

100 “Confident” packages at $247 = $9,880

1,000 “Confident” packages at $247 = $98,800

Caitlin has sold more than $3 million in 3 years in proofreading courses alone. She placed first in a sales contest of Ultimate Bundles’ Work-At-Home Bundle in June 2017. So, she knows her stuff!

Work-At-Home School appeals to consumers from the personal development, finance, fitness, and various other niches. So, lots of opportunity to reach out to a wide segment of people-
