Back to School Devotional
August 2017

It's usually the first thing I do in the morning.

I get up while it is still dark and go to my little ottoman by my front window.

My bible and notebook are waiting for me faithfully.

I call it my "Quiet time".

Sometimes it's literally just 5 minutes, other times it's much longer.

I read something, sometimes just a bible verse, sometimes it's a bible devotional book and it gets me set up for the day.

I feel like I touch the face of God and he calms me, preparing me for the busy day ahead.

After reading, I pray.

This one used to be harder for me to stick to. Then I read The Circle Maker by Mark Batterson and now I am convinced that every prayer has an effect on eternity.  This book literally changed my life.  But that's a whole other devotional..

Today is back to school day for my kids and in a way, it's back to school day for me too because life changes for us here in my household when the summer ends.

No more sleeping in, no more lazy days of summer.  Discipline and structure is re-introduced.

We have a tradition here in our household.  We always read Joshua 1 the night before school starts.

For the first time, our oldest son actually asked my husband to read it to him last night.

What an encouragement to know that our children actually get something out of the things that we try to teach them, what a joy it is to see that they actually start to develop their own personal appreciation and hunger for God's word!

Joshua 1:3-9  New International Version

...I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I  promised Moses.  Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon and from the great river, the Euphrates- all the Hittite country- to the Great Sea on the west.  No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life.  As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.....

Be strong and very courageous.  Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.  Do not let this Book of the Law depart, meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it.  Then you will be prosperous and successful.  Have I not commanded you?.  Be strong and courageous, do not be terrified; do not be discouraqed, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."
