Proofreading Jobs at Home

Info on whether it's possible to find proofreading jobs at home

If any of you are like me, you might look at proofreading from home (as a job) and think ... too good to be true.

And you're mostly right.

Proofreading, for some, might seem like an easy thing to do, but it is surprisingly difficult

and calls for an extreme amount of focus and attention to detail.

There are various proofreading niches that you can get into, whether it be proofreading for freelance writers, established authors, companies, agencies, court reporters, etc.

Typically, it can be hard to get into, unless you have the education or experience that will give you an edge over other aspiring proofreaders.

Proofreading Jobs at Home:
Education/Certification

Currently, there are no college level courses or certifications offered by Universities/Colleges to go out into the working world as a certified proofreader.

However, there is a great need for proofreaders in the online world.  Just take a look at Elance and oDesk.

Court reporters, especially, clamor for highly professional and excellent proofreaders to go through their work with a fine tooth comb.

Many Professionals who have earned degrees in English, Communication and Education will offer their services as proofreaders, but that doesn't prevent others from offering their services on job boards such as Fiverr, Elance, oDesk and even Craigslist.

The only problem is that it can be hard to find proofreading jobs at home on these boards, because there are so many  people offering their services, and the ones who will get hired, are the ones with massive amounts of great feedback or great Education credentials (this will get them noticed).

So, does this mean that online proofreading jobs are off the table?

Not necessarily, according to Caitlin Pyle of ProofreadAnywhere.com

Caitlin herself works as a Legal Transcript Proofreader and is the founder of the above website, with a goal to help people with a propensity for proofreading  (aka, those with Eagle eyes) pursue a career from home in this niche.

Her course is nothing to sneeze at.  In fact, it is a pretty hard-core, intensive legal transcript proofreading course that, on average, takes students 1-3 months to complete.

Caitlin describes it as a college level course, with over 1,000 (and growing) practice transcripts that each student would need to complete in order to graduate.  As well, the final exam is graded by an actual human, and must be passed with a score of 90 or above in order to get your certification.

From what I have seen, the course is pretty intense and is geared only towards those who are serious about starting a career from home as a Legal Transcript Proofreader.

However, for those people who complete the course, they will have an actual skill , that can be used to find legal transcript proofreading jobs at home.

And in fact, Caitlin's course also offers an entire module (about 5 lessons) on how to find work once you graduate.

This includes how to find court reporters or agencies who will hire you, letters to use, resources to find them and a Facebook group and website forum with people there to answer your questions and concerns.

She also offers a whole module on billing and accounting, so that you can run your business successfully and legally, as well as another module on how to work within the court reporting system (another-words how to work with court reporters, for smooth sailing).

Note:  She does offer a free 7 day course, but please be aware that this is a FREE course and as such, you will not learn how to be a proofreader in 7 days, you just won't.

So, please keep in mind, that the 7 day course is just to give you a feel for what proofreading is like again, this is a veritable skill that cannot be learned in 7 days.

My Take?

For those of you looking into finding proofreading jobs at home, my advice is to look into Caitlin's course.   Her website is chock full of information and will get you started on the right foot, and her track record of happy court reporters and happy students speaks for itself.

Her website can be found at: www.ProofreadAnywhere.com

Best of luck!
