In Volume 9, we will cover: Ideas for making some summer cash and a few fun and FREE activities for the kids!

  • Hope you all had a happy 4th of July and lots of Apple Pie !

    Welcome to summer, everyone!

Summer is always a fun time in our household; lots of playdates, swimming and barbecues with friends...

It can also be very challenging to squeeze some "work" time in without the accompanying feelings of guilt that you're not spending enough time with the kids...

So, that's why I am sending this newsletter out to all you moms, to let you know that:

#1 .. You are awesome and in case your family hasn't told you that today, I am telling you!

#2 Never fear, there are ways to make extra cash in the summer without too much of a disruption to your family's fun!

    First Stop: Sittercity!

I don't know about you but I always seem to have a gaggle of kids at my house.

(For some reason, they all seem to really like hanging out at my house)

I'm not complaining, in fact, I welcome it.. it keeps my kids entertained and as long as I shovel some food out to the kids from time to time, everyone stays happy!

Adding one or two more kids to the mix and getting paid for it doesn't seem like such a bad deal, especially when it means that it doesn't really disrupt any summer fun that my kids are having and that I get to be around to spend the day with them!

So, what am I talking about here?

Simple, I'm talking about working from home as a sitter!

Sittercity offers a way for moms to make an income from home by picking up jobs as a babysitter.

Unlike running a daycare out of your home, these types of jobs can range from temporary to permanent, can be performed from the comfort of your own home or outside your home if you prefer (although you wouldn't be able to take your kids if you worked out of your client's home) and they also cost you virtually nothing in terms of advertisement and upkeep.

The only cost that might be involved is the cost of running a background check, which, although not required by Sittercity, is highly recommended for your client's peace of mind (and you will probably get more jobs that way as well).

Within minutes of signing up with Sittercity, you will be able to see all the available jobs in your area. There are various types of jobs... from 1 day jobs to 5 day a week jobs, also, there are even jobs for pet sitters and caretakers for the elderly.

The neat thing about this type of work is that you can get started with it almost immediately and you are in charge of your schedule, making it a very kid friendly way to make some extra cash this summer.

Here's another idea... why not try working as a Pet Sitter?

If working from home as a sitter is really not for you, perhaps working as a pet sitter might be a more appealing prospect

Similar to working as a babysitter, being a pet sitter can be done on a full time or part time basis and best of all, it can be done from home!

If your children love pets, then this might be a great option for you... a great way to make extra money, have the schedule fit your family's schedule and maybe even provide a little entertainment for the kids!

    And... don't count this out!

    Mystery Shopping!

Mystery Shopping is given a bad rap...

I go over the topic of Mystery Shopping on the following pages:

    All About Mystery Shopping

Getting set up as a Mystery Shopper

    Types of Shops

    Mystery Shopping Certification

    Examples of Mystery Shop Reports

Now, the thing about Mystery Shopping is that it may not be worth your time, right?

    Not necessarily

The trick with Mystery Shopping is to find those "shops" that are paying bonuses.

Bonuses can be offered for a couple of reasons, mostly because the scheduler needs to get these shops completed by a certain time... or because the previous shopper cancelled.

Whatever the reason, bonuses can bump up your payout for a mystery shop quite substantially (and don't be afraid to bargain with the scheduler for an even higher rate, within reason of course!)

The reason I mention Mystery Shopping in this newsletter is because this is the time of year that there are many theatre and amusement park shops available..... (and what's better than getting paid to go to an amusement park) ... so keep your eyes peeled for those types of shops folks!

    Speaking of which....

How about some ideas for free entertainment for your kids!

I know most of you don't want to spend the whole summer hanging out at home but the cost of entertaining kids but can be quite daunting at times!

There are lots of low cost or even free things you can do with the kids, it might just take a little research.

Here's a list to get you started:

  • 1. Many movie theatres throughout the country offer free viewings of kids movies once or twice a week, so why not try calling or researching your local move theatres online to see if your local theatre offers this?

  • Some movie theatres such as AMC Theatres may not offer free movies but may offer admission for $1.

  • 2. Home Depot and Lowe's offer free kids workshops (Home depot offers this for kids ages 5-12 on the first Saturday of every month, Lowe's offers this every weekend). Kids get to build a craft or a wooden object... totally free!

  • 3. Bank of America credit or debit card holders get a nice perk.. one free ticket on the first Saturday of every month to any one of over 150 participating museums (available in 31 states). Check your local museums as well, as many of them offer discounted rates or specials at various times.

  • Here's a link to the deal

  • 4. Free concerts in the park are offered throughout many cities in the U.S. Check your local city website for dates and times!

  • 5. Many libraries offer free puppet shows, movies and book clubs that offer prizes for reading such as free ice cream or fast food coupons. It's a great way to spend an afternoon once a week and it's freeeee!

Well, that's it for this month's newsletter!
